Hillsborough Castle

Hillsborough Castle is situated in the village of Royal Hillsborough within County Down, Northern Ireland. Despite its name, the structure is not a medieval fortress but rather an elegant Georgian country house constructed during the 18th century. It was originally built as the private residence for the Hill family, who held the title of Marquesses of Downshire. The estate remained in their possession for nearly two centuries until 1922, when the seventh Marquess sold the mansion and its extensive grounds to the British government. This acquisition addressed an immediate administrative need following the creation of Northern Ireland under the Government of Ireland Act 1920, providing a suitable seat of authority for the new region.

Historically, the building served as the official residence for the Governor of Northern Ireland from 1924 until that office was abolished in 1973. Today, it holds significant status as the official residence of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and serves as the primary royal residence in the region for the British monarch and other members of the royal family during their visits. It also functions as a prestigious guest house for prominent international dignitaries. The property is currently owned by King Charles III in right of the Crown and has been managed by Historic Royal Palaces since April 2014.

In its current condition, Hillsborough Castle is well-maintained and open to the paying public, offering visitors access to its historic rooms and gardens. Its transition from a private aristocratic home to a key government asset highlights its enduring importance in Anglo-Irish relations.
