Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle, formally known as La Cuesta Encantada or The Enchanted Hill, is a historic estate located in San Simeon on the Central Coast of California. Construction of this magnificent property spanned from 1919 to 1947, commissioned by publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst and designed by the pioneering architect Julia Morgan. The structure showcases a blend of Spanish Colonial Revival and Mediterranean Revival styles, featuring a centerpiece building called Casa Grande that was inspired by a church in Ronda, Spain. The estate covers more than 90,000 square feet and sits on land originally purchased by Hearst's father in 1865 for family camping vacations before being transformed into a grand residence.

The castle holds immense historical significance as a gathering place for the elite during the Roaring Twenties and beyond. Although initially intended as a family home, it became the primary residence for Hearst and his mistress, actress Marion Davies. Their guest list read like a who's who of the era, including Hollywood legends such as Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, and Clark Gable, alongside political figures like Winston Churchill and Calvin Coolidge. Hearst, often called the Great Accumulator, filled the estate with an extensive collection of European art and architectural elements, particularly from Spain, intending the property to serve as a museum of the finest things he could secure.

Today, Hearst Castle operates as a museum within the California State Park system and is recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark. Open to the public, the site preserves the legacy of its famous builder and the lavish lifestyle of the early twentieth century. Despite construction halting upon Hearst's final departure in 1947, the estate remains in excellent condition, offering visitors a glimpse into a unique period of American history where media power, celebrity culture, and architectural ambition converged on a scenic hilltop overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
