Gruuthuse

The Lords of Gruuthuse were a prominent noble family originating in Bruges, Flanders, during the medieval period. Emerging in the 13th century, the family held significant titles including Lord of Gruuthuse, Prince of Steenhuijs, and Earl of Winchester. Their ancestral seat, the Gruuthuse House, stands in Bruges and currently serves as a museum dedicated to the city's history and the family's legacy. The family is historically associated with the heraldic motto "Plus est en vous," translating to "there is more in you," which reflected their esteemed status within the region.

The most celebrated member of the lineage was Lodewijk van Gruuthuse, who lived from 1422 to 1492. A renowned statesman and bibliophile, he was a close confidant to the Dukes of Burgundy and a knight of the prestigious Order of the Golden Fleece. Under his leadership, the family reached the zenith of its political influence and cultural patronage. The direct male line of the family continued for several more generations before becoming extinct in 1572 with the death of René van Gruuthuse. Despite the end of the male line, the family name persisted through earlier female heirs who married into the van der Aa family, ensuring the continuation of their heritage.
