Grey Towers Castle

Grey Towers Castle is a historic mansion located on the campus of Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. Constructed between 1893 and 1898, the estate was commissioned by William Welsh Harrison, a co-owner of the Franklin Sugar Refinery, after his previous residence burned down. The building was designed by the renowned architect Horace Trumbauer, who was only twenty-three years old when he first began working for the Harrison family. Trumbauer created a grandiose structure inspired by Alnwick Castle in England, the medieval seat of the Dukes of Northumberland, resulting in a striking example of Gothic Revival architecture mixed with other eclectic stylistic elements. The castle is built from grey stone quarried nearby in Chestnut Hill, giving the estate its distinctive name and appearance.

The property holds significant historical value as a National Historic Landmark, a designation it received in 1985 specifically for its architectural merit. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. In 1929, the institution then known as Beaver College purchased the 138-acre estate for $712,500 to expand its campus. While classes were initially split between locations, the university consolidated all operations at the Glenside site by 1962. Today, the castle remains an integral part of the university, serving as a prominent landmark that connects the school's modern educational mission with its rich Gilded Age origins.

The history of the site includes dramatic events, such as the fiery destruction of the original Rosedale Hall in 1893, which forced the Harrison family to flee to the stables for safety before the new castle was erected. During the five-year construction period, the family resided in the gatehouse that Trumbauer had previously designed. The mansion was equipped with the most modern conveniences available at the turn of the twentieth century, reflecting the wealth and status of its original owners. Now preserved within an academic setting, Grey Towers Castle stands as a testament to late nineteenth-century design and the legacy of one of America's notable young architects.
