Gârbova

Gârbova is a commune situated in Alba County within the Transylvania region of Romania, specifically located in the southeastern part of the county near the border with Sibiu County. The area encompasses three villages: Cărpiniș, Gârbova, and Reciu, with the Gârbova river flowing through the landscape. While the settlement itself functions as a modern administrative unit with a population of approximately 1,867 people as of 2021, its most notable landmark is not a residential castle but the historic ruins of a Romanesque basilica perched on a hill overlooking the village. The basilica was originally constructed in 1280, showcasing distinct Romanesque architectural styles characteristic of medieval Transylvanian religious buildings. However, its functional history came to an abrupt end on Christmas Day in 1870 when a devastating fire destroyed the roof and caused significant structural damage.
