Gammel Vraa Castle

Gammel Vraa is a historic former manor house situated in the town of Tylstrup within the North Jutland Region of Denmark. Located approximately 16 kilometers from Aalborg and nestled between forests and fields, the estate lies near the small towns of Sulsted and Tylstrup. The property is distinctively surrounded by a moat, which is crossed by a wooden bridge designed to resemble a suspension bridge. This scenic setting provides a picturesque approach to the main building, preserving the traditional atmosphere of a Danish country estate while remaining accessible to visitors traveling through the region.

The current two-story structure was originally constructed in 1645 under the ownership of Ide Hansdatter Lindenov and her husband, Steen Beck, who served as the Danish Minister of Finance. During this period, the Gammel Vraa estate held the distinction of being the largest in Denmark, and the initials of the founding couple remain visible on the building walls today. The architecture evolved significantly in 1779 when the main house was rebuilt and two side wings were added. In the twentieth century, the site transitioned into an educational center for farmers before undergoing another major transformation in 1977.

Today, Gammel Vraa operates as the Vraa Slotshotel, a unique hotel and restaurant complex. This modern iteration began when Chris Hillingsøe installed hotel facilities and added two towers to the existing historical framework in 1977. The establishment currently offers forty-three double rooms alongside dining services, allowing guests to stay within a building that has witnessed centuries of Danish agricultural and aristocratic history. From its origins as a premier estate to its role in farmer education and current status as a hospitality venue, the castle remains a significant landmark in North Jutland.
