Galgorm Castle

Galgorm Castle is a historic structure located in the townland of Galgorm, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, situated approximately one kilometer west of Ballymena on the River Maine. Constructed in 1618 by Sir Faithful Fortescue, the building is widely recognized as one of the finest surviving examples of early Jacobean architecture in Ireland. The castle originally served as the centerpiece of a large estate, the boundaries of which still define the modern townland. Throughout its history, the property changed hands several times, passing from Fortescue to Dr. Alexander Colville in 1645, then to his son Sir Robert Colville, and eventually descending to the Earl Mount Cashell. Its strategic location near the old Moravian settlement of Gracehill and its architectural grandeur have made it a notable landmark in the region for over four centuries.

Today, the castle grounds have been repurposed as the Galgorm Castle Golf Club, a resort facility established in 1995 that features an 18-hole championship course designed by Simon Gidman. While the original structure remains part of the site, the area is now primarily known for hosting major sporting events, including the Northern Ireland Open and the rescheduled 2020 Irish Open during the global pandemic. The location has also gained fame in the entertainment industry, serving as a filming location for television productions such as The Frankenstein Chronicles starring Sean Bean. The surrounding townland remains predominantly residential with a Protestant background, functioning as an extension of Ballymena while retaining distinct local institutions like independent shops and Orange Order lodges.
