Gagron Fort is a unique military installation located in the Jhalawar district of Rajasthan, India, within the historic Hadoti region. Situated just five kilometers from Jhalawar city, the structure stands at the confluence of the Ahu and Kali Sindh rivers. Distinguished as both a hill and water fort, it is surrounded by water on three sides with a protective moat on the fourth, earning it the local name Jaladurg or Water Fort. While the exact construction date remains a subject of historical debate, estimates suggest development occurred between the seventh and fourteenth centuries, with significant establishment attributed to King Bijaldev Singh Dod of the Parmar Rajput clan in the twelfth century. Some accounts also credit Raja Madho Bhil with laying the initial foundation before the site came under Rajput control.

The fort holds immense historical significance due to its strategic location and the fierce battles fought for its possession. It served as a stronghold for the Khinchi kingdom for approximately three hundred years until the reign of King Achal Das Khinchi. The site witnessed major conflicts, including the 1444 capture by Mahmud Khalji and the 1519 Battle of Gagron where Rana Sanga defeated the Sultan of Malwa. Over the centuries, control of the fort shifted among various powers, including Sher Shah Suri and the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Its architectural resilience and historical narrative reflect the turbulent martial history of medieval India.

In recognition of its outstanding universal value, Gagron Fort was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. It was included as part of the serial nomination known as the Hill Forts of Rajasthan, satisfying cultural criteria related to the exchange of human values and testimony to a cultural tradition. Today, the fort stands as a preserved monument and a key tourist attraction in Rajasthan. Its condition reflects centuries of history, offering visitors a glimpse into ancient defensive engineering that utilized natural water bodies as primary barriers against invasion.
