Frankopan Castle

Frankopan Castle, also known as Frankopanski Kaštel, is a historic medieval fortress situated on the southwest coast of Krk Island in the ancient town of Krk, Croatia. Constructed beginning in 1191 by the prominent Croatian noble House of Frankopan, the structure stands as one of the oldest architectural landmarks in the Adriatic region. Built primarily from local limestone, the castle features a distinctive blend of defensive elements, including an original square tower that housed the family courtroom and diocese, alongside a later cylindrical round tower added in the thirteenth century. The complex was fully completed before 1348 after several generations of expansion and modification by the Frankopan counts.

The castle holds significant historical value as the administrative center for the Frankopan family, who dominated the island following the death of Count Dujam I. An inscription above the entrance confirms its 1191 origins during the tenure of Bishop John and Counts Vid I and Bartol I. The round tower bears further historical marks, including a brick inscription from 1500 dedicated to Venetian liberty and featuring the lions of Saint Mark, reflecting the political shifts of the era. Although the site has undergone slight renovations over the centuries, particularly around 1480 and 1600, it retains much of its medieval character and structural integrity.

Today, Frankopan Castle remains open to the public and serves as a key cultural attraction within the town of Krk. While currently under the control of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Krk, the site functions as a tangible link to the region's noble past and maritime history. Visitors can explore the remnants of soldier quarters, guard posts, and the historic towers that once protected the municipality. Its preservation allows modern audiences to appreciate the architectural evolution of Croatian coastal fortifications and the enduring legacy of the Frankopan dynasty.
