Fort Nutjak

Fort Nutjak is a late medieval fortress located in Croatia, overlooking the dramatic canyon of the Cetina River approximately three kilometers downstream from the town of Trilj. Constructed in the 15th century, likely under the orders of Duke Žarko Dražojević of the Republic of Poljica, the structure was designed to defend the lands west of the river from Ottoman invasion. The site holds deep historical roots, as archaeological research suggests it was built upon a prehistoric settlement. Its strategic importance was such that Pope Innocent VIII agreed to finance its maintenance in 1492. The fortress changed hands multiple times, passing from local control to Ottoman conquest before 1513, retaken by Poljica forces in 1685, and eventually assigned to Venice following the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699.

The architectural complex is dominated by a large circular tower constructed from partially processed stone blocks bound with plaster and filled with smaller stones. A partially preserved main entrance on the western side leads into a small courtyard surrounded by various rooms with an irregular floor plan. Although the fort once housed an Ottoman garrison subordinate to the Kadi of Imotski, its military significance diminished after the construction of a nearby Venetian fort at Gardun and the eventual expulsion of Ottoman forces from Imotski in 1717. By the early 20th century, the stronghold had fallen into ruins. Today, Fort Nutjak is protected as an immovable cultural property of Croatia and remains accessible via a path branching from the Trilj-Bisko road, serving as a historical landmark rather than an active military site.
