Drzewica Castle

Drzewica Castle is a Gothic-Renaissance fortress located in the town of Drzewica within Łódź Voivodeship in Poland. The castle was constructed between 1527 and 1535 by Maciej Drzewicki, the Archbishop of Gniezno. Built on the town's periphery near the Drzewiczka River, the structure was strategically fortified with moats separated by bulwarks to enhance its defensive capabilities. The castle's architectural design features a regular rectangular floor plan with four square towers positioned at each corner, providing comprehensive defensive coverage.

The castle experienced a significant fire in 1814 that left the structure in ruins. However, this destructive event inadvertently preserved the castle in its original sixteenth-century form, as it underwent no subsequent modifications or reconstructions. Today, Drzewica Castle stands as one of Poland's best-preserved residential structures from the early sixteenth century, offering valuable insight into Renaissance-era Polish aristocratic architecture and defensive design. The well-maintained ruins remain an important historical landmark that reflects the architectural sophistication and strategic planning of the period, attracting interest from historians and heritage enthusiasts.
