Drégely Castle

Drégely Castle is a historic hilltop fortress located on a 440-meter peak in the Börzsöny mountains of Nógrád County, Hungary. Situated near the village of Drégelypalánk within the Danube-Ipoly National Park, the site is most easily accessed via a surfaced road from Nagyoroszi. Originally constructed in the late 13th century, likely by the Hunt-Poznan family under the order of King Béla IV, the stone structure served various roles throughout the medieval period. It functioned as a county dungeon and archive holder before being acquired by the Archbishop of Esztergom in 1438, who renovated it into a hunting seat. The castle represents typical medieval military architecture designed for strategic defense rather than residential luxury.

The site holds profound historical significance due to its heroic stand during the Ottoman wars in 1552. As part of Hungary's border castle system, it was defended by Castellan György Szondy and a small garrison of roughly 146 men against an overwhelming Ottoman force of over 10,000 soldiers led by Ali Pasha. Despite being vastly outnumbered and suffering from unpaid wages and previous lightning strikes, the defenders fought bravely until the castle was razed in July 1552. This event remains a celebrated chapter in Hungarian national history, symbolizing resistance against invasion. Following its destruction, the fortress served only as a watchpost until it was finally abandoned later in the 16th century.

Today, Drégely Castle exists as a ruined but culturally vital landmark owned by the Drégely Foundation. Although demolished centuries ago, restoration efforts officially commenced in 1990 to preserve the remaining walls and honor its legacy. The site is currently open to the public, allowing visitors to explore the atmospheric ruins and learn about the brave defense that took place there. While the structure is no longer intact, ongoing conservation work ensures that the memory of Szondy and his warriors endures. The castle stands not only as an archaeological site but also as a monument to courage, drawing history enthusiasts and hikers alike to its scenic mountain location.
