wikipedia

Macea Castle, also known as Csernovics Castle, is a historic landmark situated in the Macea Commune of Arad County, Romania. Originally constructed as a mansion in 1745 for the noble Csernovics family, the structure underwent a significant transformation beginning in 1862 under the ownership of the Hungarian Károlyi family. The current architectural identity is defined by the Secession style, featuring French-inspired elements such as an added wing and a distinctive thirty-meter tower. The estate is equally renowned for its expansive park, which was enriched with diverse plant species brought from the Near East in the mid-19th century and later expanded to include vast planted forests.

The castle possesses a rich and somewhat dramatic history tied to its aristocratic owners. After receiving nobility titles in the early 18th century, the Csernovics family developed the initial estate until Peter Csernovics famously lost the property in a card game. Ownership then passed to the Károlyi family, who modernized the building and documented its grandeur through early photography. Following a period of neglect in the early 20th century and subsequent expropriation in 1948, the building served various social functions, including use as an orphanage, an asylum for the blind, and a rehabilitation center for children during the communist era.

In the post-revolution period, the site entered a new chapter of preservation and educational use. Since 1991, the castle and its surrounding park have been managed by the Vasile Goldiş West University of Arad, which eventually purchased the property. Today, the castle stands as a protected historic monument that blends 18th-century origins with 19th-century architectural elegance. It remains a significant cultural asset in the region, representing the legacy of Transylvanian nobility while serving contemporary academic purposes.
