Comlod
wikipedia

Comlod is a village within the Milaș commune, situated in Bistrița-Năsăud County in the Transylvania region of Romania. Located on the Transylvanian Plateau at an altitude of 378 meters, it lies near the border with Mureș County, approximately 47 kilometers from the county seat of Bistrița. The area is historically significant as part of a community that includes several other villages, reflecting a diverse cultural heritage with Romanian, Hungarian, and German influences evident in historical naming conventions.

The most prominent landmark in Comlod is the Teleki Castle, constructed in 1756. This structure is a fine example of mid-18th-century architecture and holds considerable historical value as one of only eleven castles in the county officially declared a historical monument by the Romanian Ministry of Culture. The castle stands as a testament to the region's aristocratic past and remains a key cultural asset. Alongside the castle, the village also features the Saint John the Baptist Church, contributing to the local architectural landscape.

Today, Comlod exists as a quiet rural settlement within a commune that has seen its population gradually decrease over the last century, from over 3,000 residents in the early 20th century to just under 1,200 in recent years. Despite these demographic shifts, the village retains its importance due to its protected heritage sites. The area is also noted as the birthplace of Iuliu Hossu, a prominent Greek Catholic bishop who was persecuted under communist rule and later beatified by Pope Francis, adding a layer of religious and historical significance to the locality's legacy.
