Château Malou (Maloukasteel)
Château Malou, also known as Maloukasteel, is a distinguished neoclassical building located in the municipality of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert within the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium. Completed in 1776, the structure was commissioned by the wealthy merchant Lambert de Lamberts to replace an earlier seventeenth-century hunting lodge that previously occupied the site. The château is strategically situated in the heart of Malou Park, where it overlooks the scenic valley of the Woluwe stream. The surrounding grounds enhance its aesthetic appeal with a formal lawn at the front and a small lake inhabited by swans and ducks, creating a picturesque setting that has remained largely intact since its construction.
The historical significance of the estate is marked by its association with prominent political figures during a turbulent era in Belgian history. Following its initial construction, the property was owned by Pierre van Gobbelschroy, an orangist minister, until the end of the Dutch period in 1829. After Belgium gained independence, the château eventually passed to Jules Malou, who served as the Finance Minister for the new Belgian government. Malou took up residence in 1853, and the building has retained his name ever since, serving as a lasting tribute to his tenure. This transition of ownership reflects the broader political shifts from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands to an independent Belgian state.
Today, the Château Malou is the property of the municipality of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert and has been repurposed to serve the local community. Rather than functioning as a private residence, it is primarily utilized as a venue for cultural activities and exhibitions.
