Castlewellan Castle

Castlewellan Forest Park is situated in the town of Castlewellan within County Down, Northern Ireland. Spanning approximately 460 hectares, the site features extensive woodlands and a substantial 40-hectare lake set against the backdrop of the Mourne Mountains. Although the park itself was opened to the public in 1967 following its acquisition by the Forest Service from the Annesley family, its historical roots run much deeper. The grounds are home to the historic Castlewellan Castle, the Castlewellan Arboretum, and the Annesley Garden, which was originally established in 1740. This location serves as a significant recreational and natural resource managed by the Forest Service Northern Ireland.

The architectural and botanical heritage of the estate is particularly notable. The Annesley Garden, once a 12.5-acre walled enclosure, has expanded to cover 120 acres and holds one of the most remarkable tree collections in Europe. Originally planted by Hugh Annesley, the 5th Earl Annesley, the arboretum once boasted over 1,800 species, with more than 700 taxa and thirty champion trees surviving today. Giant sequoias introduced in the 1850s remain a key feature, providing habitats for local wildlife such as treecreepers. The site also includes distinctive structures like the Moorish Tower and greenhouses, reflecting the diverse landscaping efforts undertaken over centuries by the estate's head gardeners.

In recent decades, the park faced challenges regarding maintenance and resource shortages, leading to a period of decline during the late 1990s. However, significant restoration efforts were undertaken between 2012 and 2014 to conserve key areas, including the historic greenhouses and towers. Further redevelopment plans for the courtyard and arboretum were announced in 2021 through collaborations between the Forest Service and the local council. Today, the park stands as a restored landmark that blends natural beauty with historical significance, offering visitors access to its unique arboretum, peaceful lake, and the enduring legacy of the Annesley family estate.
