Castle of Vila Verde dos Francos

The Castle of Vila Verde dos Francos is a medieval military installation situated in the civil parish of Vila Verde dos Francos, within the municipality of Alenquer in the Lisbon District of Portugal. Perched atop a small hill of rocky outcrops in an isolated rural setting, the site is surrounded by agricultural fields and vineyards. Constructed primarily from limestone and mixtum vittatum, the castle dates back to the 12th century. Historical records indicate that in 1160, King Afonso Henriques donated the land to D. Alardo, a French captain, and his group of Crusaders as a reward for their crucial support in conquering Lisbon, Sintra, Almada, Palmela, and Alenquer. Tradition attributes the initial construction of the fortress to D. Alardo following the issuance of a royal charter.

The region boasts a rich history of human occupation spanning prehistory through Greek, Phoenician, Roman, Gothic, and Muslim eras, though the castle itself fell into disrepair relatively early. By the mid-18th century, the structure was already documented as being in ruins. Over time, the landscape became overgrown with wild blackberries, necessitating modern efforts to clear the terrain and consolidate the remaining masonry. Significant preservation work occurred in 1987, during which researcher Jorge Peixoto identified a compact structure within the complex as a chapel dedicated to São Luís. Despite these interventions, the general state of ruin remains advanced, making it impossible to fully reconstruct the original architectural typology.

Today, the property is owned by the Portuguese Republic and is open to the public, although only fragmentary elements survive. Visitors can observe several lines of foundation walls forming an irregular plan, along with remnants of rectangular towers at the extremes and an entranceway along the lower walls. A curvilinear segment of the wall on the opposite side also persists in a deteriorated condition. While the complete layout has been lost to time and decay, the site stands as a tangible reminder of the Reconquista period and the strategic importance of the Alenquer region during the formation of the Portuguese nation.
