Castle of Santo Estêvão

The Castle of Santo Estêvão is a medieval fortification situated in the civil parish of Santo Estêvão within the municipality of Chaves, in the Vila Real district of northern Portugal. Positioned dominantly over the village, the site lies near the Tamega River and close to the Spanish border. Constructed primarily from granite, wood, and iron, the castle dates back to the 11th century, with construction occurring during the reigns of Kings Afonso I and Sancho I. Today, the property is owned by the Portuguese Republic and is open to the public, though it currently exists as ruins and vestiges of its former structure.
