Castle of Redondos

The Castle of Redondos, also known as the Tower of Redondos, is a medieval military structure situated in the civil parish of Buarcos within the municipality of Figueira da Foz, Portugal. Located in the Coimbra district near the mouth of the Mondego River, the site currently features the remains of a single tower constructed primarily of masonry and mortar. While the visible structure dates to the 15th century, the location holds much older historical roots, with the earliest recorded reference to a tower on this site appearing in 1096. Originally part of a donation by Abbey Pedro to the Sé Cathedral of Coimbra, the fortification was officially confirmed by Afonso Henriques to help defend the local anchorage against pirate raids.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle played a strategic role in regional defense and administration. By the 13th century, it was noted in property rolls belonging to the Monastery of Santa Cruz, and later records from 1579 described it as a significant defensive fort under the purview of the University of Coimbra. During the 16th century, the structure was distinguished from nearby towers by names such as the Tower above the Church or the Tower of the Monastery of Santa Cruz. Historical documents also trace ownership changes, including a notable transfer of the alcaldia in 1697 from D. Leonardo de Santo Agostinho to her nephew, Pedro Viegas de Novais.

Today, the Castle of Redondos exists as a ruin, with only the remnants of its original tower surviving the passage of time. Despite its dilapidated condition, the site remains an important landmark of Portuguese architectural heritage and is owned by the Portuguese Republic. It is accessible to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into the coastal defense strategies of the region. The site serves as a tangible link to the area's maritime history, commemorating centuries of protection over the Buarcos harbor and standing as a testament to the evolving military needs of central Portugal from the early medieval period through the modern era.
