Castle of Melgaço

The Castle of Melgaço stands in the Vila parish of Melgaço municipality within the Viana do Castelo district of northern Portugal. Constructed in 1170 under the orders of King Afonso Henriques, this fortress served as the primary defense for the Alto Minho river crossing into Galicia, marking the northernmost sentry point of the kingdom since the twelfth century. Its strategic importance was further solidified in 1361 when all traffic between Portugal and Galicia was mandated to pass through Melgaço. The site holds deep historical significance, having played a role during the 1383–1385 succession crisis and serving as one of only five border entry points for Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492.

Architecturally, the castle features a rare circular layout divided into three precincts, distinguished by prismatic battlements and three reinforcing towers. The complex is dominated by a central, isolated square keep that was fully rebuilt yet retains Romanesque design characteristics. Originally depicted in the 1509 Book of Fortresses with three towers and two gates, the structure includes a main western gate leading to an arms square and cistern, alongside a secondary betrayal door. Although the village and castle faced periods of conflict and foreign occupation, the core construction characteristics have been preserved through centuries of change.

Today, the Castle of Melgaço is classified as a National Monument, a status granted to the castle in 1910 and the town walls in 1926. While significant government intervention did not occur until the 1960s, recent recovery projects have revitalized the historic core. The keep has been reclassified as a museum center, where visitors can explore testimonies and artifacts uncovered through archaeological research. Currently operating as both a preserved historical landmark and an educational space, the castle offers a lookout point from its battlements and stands as a testament to the region's medieval military heritage.
