Castle of Lousã

The Castle of Lousã, also historically known as the Castle of Arouce, is a classified National Monument located in the civil parish of Lousã e Vilarinho within the municipality of Lousã, Portugal. Situated approximately two kilometers from the town center on the right margin of the River Arouce, this military installation was originally constructed during the second half of the 11th century. Built primarily from granite, shale, clay, and cement, the structure features an architectural style reflective of early medieval defensive needs. Its initial smaller perimeter dates to this foundational period, with subsequent expansions occurring during the early Middle Ages to strengthen its role as a frontier fortification.

Historically, the castle played a pivotal role in protecting access routes to Coimbra. Its past is marked by a turbulent cycle of occupation and liberation, beginning with Count Sisnando Davides in 1080, followed by a brief reoccupation by Moorish forces. In 1124, the castle was successfully retaken by the forces of Dona Teresa, who ordered repairs to the defenses. The site later gained royal significance when Queen Dona Mafalda used the settlement and castle as a summer residence. Due to its strategic importance on the border, King Afonso Henriques issued a foral in 1151 to encourage settlement and reinforce security against recurring Moorish raids in the Zêzere valley.

Today, the Castle of Lousã is owned by the Portuguese Republic and remains open to the public. While the main military structure stands as a testament to the region's volatile history, the surrounding valley also contains abandoned structures that once encircled the fortress. As a designated National Monument, it serves as a key historical landmark for visitors interested in the Reconquista era and the architectural heritage of central Portugal. The site offers a glimpse into the layered history of conflict and royal residence that defined the early years of the Portuguese monarchy.
