Castle of l'Estriverie

The Castle of l'Estriverie is a historic residence located in the village of Bois-de-Lessines within the municipality of Lessines, in the Hainaut province of Wallonia, Belgium. While the estate was first declared a fief by the Counts of Hainaut in 1324 and granted to Gérard de Lestruve, the original fortified structure on the site dates to 1454. It was erected by Watier de Quivrains of the Despretz de Quievrain family, who held the property until 1483. The current building stands directly upon the foundations of this medieval dwelling, preserving a physical link to its fifteenth-century origins despite significant subsequent modifications.

The castle possesses notable historical significance due to its long tenure under the Cottrel family, who acquired the estate through marriage in 1483 and maintained ownership for seven generations. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this family undertook extensive restoration and rebuilding efforts that fundamentally altered the structure's character. They successfully transformed the site from a defensive medieval fortress into a graceful château, reflecting the architectural evolution of the region during the Renaissance and early modern periods. Following the Cottrel era, ownership passed through the Spinola lineage before becoming the subject of a legal dispute in the mid-eighteenth century involving the court of Hainault, which ultimately transferred the property to Jean Philippe d'Yve, Viscount of Bavay.

Today, the Castle of l'Estriverie remains a recognized landmark within the Belgian heritage landscape, categorized among the notable castles of Hainaut Province. Although specific details regarding its current interior condition or public accessibility are not extensively documented in available records, the structure serves as an enduring example of how military architecture was adapted for residential elegance over centuries.
