Castle of Curutelo

The Castle of Curutelo, also known locally as Paço do Curutelo, is a well-preserved medieval structure situated in the civil parish of Ardegão, Freixo e Mato within the municipality of Ponte de Lima. Located in the Viana do Castelo district of northern Portugal, this historic site stands as a testament to the region's rich architectural heritage. Constructed primarily from granite, the castle is officially owned by the Portuguese Republic and remains open to the public, allowing visitors to explore its grounds and appreciate its enduring presence in the Alto Minho region.

The origins of the castle are shrouded in historical debate, with multiple interpretations regarding its construction date and founders. Conversely, other historical records indicate that while a majorat was confirmed by King John I in 1395 for Nuno Viegas do Rego, the current palace structure may have been erected later, possibly in 1532 by João Rodrigues do Lago.
