Castle of Castelo Melhor

The Castle of Castelo Melhor is a medieval fortress situated in the civil parish of Castelo Melhor, within the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa in the Guarda district of northern Portugal. Constructed primarily during the 13th century, though with origins tracing back to the 11th century, the structure exemplifies the secondary fortresses built in the peripheral zones of the Iberian kingdoms. The castle was erected using local granite and schist, materials that blend seamlessly with the rugged landscape. Its strategic position atop a hill offers commanding views over the Côa River valley, a feature that has defined its military utility since antiquity. Before the stone castle existed, the site was occupied by a pre-Roman castro established by the Turduli peoples, highlighting its long-standing importance as a defensive location.

Historically, the site played a critical role during the intense period of fortification along the Riba-Côa lines, which served as a contested border between Portuguese and Castilian monarchs. Originally held by Leonese forces, the project to build the castle was formalized when King Alfonso VII of León granted a charter to the settlement between 1209 and 1210. This royal decree ordered the construction of the fortification to consolidate both the local population and military defenses against rival powers. As one of the best examples of medieval military architecture in this frontier region, the castle stands as a testament to the volatile political history of the peninsula during the Middle Ages.

Today, the Castle of Castelo Melhor is owned by the Portuguese Republic and managed by the DRCNorte cultural heritage department. It remains open to the public, allowing visitors to explore the wall fortifications that circle the mountain summit. While the structure has undergone various changes over the centuries, it retains its historical character amidst surrounding olive orchards. The site serves not only as a monument to past conflicts but also as a preserved landmark where the layers of history, from ancient tribal settlements to medieval royal decrees, are visibly integrated into the terrain.
