Castle of Bemposta

The Castle of Bemposta is a medieval fortification located in the civil parish of Bemposta, within the municipality of Mogadouro in the Bragança district of northern Portugal. Constructed between 1279 and 1325 under the orders of King Denis, the structure was originally designed to surround the local settlement with a defensive perimeter measuring approximately 352 meters. Built primarily from stone, limestone, and granite, the castle utilized strategic methods similar to those employed in nearby Miranda, featuring flanked gates and corbels. Its irregular oval plan was adapted to the local topography, extending into the town itself, and included access to a pre-existing well to ensure water supply during sieges.

Historically, the site holds significance as a border defense between Portugal and Spain, situated about half a league from the Douro River. Throughout the centuries, ownership shifted among notable figures, including a donation by King John I in 1399 to Rui Gonçalves Alcoforado and later possession by the Sampaio family, eventually becoming the donatary captaincy of the Count of Sampaio by 1797. By the mid-18th century, records described the location as having a small wall referred to as a castle, where various residences were integrated into the defensive line. The site also served as a logistical point for river crossings via barges connecting to Fermozelhe and Vilarinho de Aires.

Today, the Castle of Bemposta is owned by the Portuguese Republic and operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bragança-Miranda. While much of the original structure has faded over time, southern remnants of the walls remain perceptible, offering a glimpse into its primitive defensive nature. The site is open to the public, allowing visitors to explore the surviving fragments of this historic border stronghold. Although the full grandeur of the medieval construction has not been preserved, the existing ruins stand as a testament to the region's strategic military past and its evolution from a royal fortification to a integrated part of the local community.
