Castello Tramontano

Castello Tramontano is a historic fortification located on Lapellio Hill, overlooking the ancient city of Matera in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy. Constructed beginning in 1501 under the direction of Giovanni Carlo Tramontano, Count of Matera, the structure features distinct Aragonese architectural elements. The design includes a prominent central tower flanked by two lower, round side towers, all characterized by crenellated battlements and arrowslits. Unlike traditional defensive citadels meant to protect a city from external invaders, this castle was strategically positioned outside the city walls specifically to exert feudal control and surveillance over the local population.

The castle possesses a turbulent history rooted in political conflict and social unrest. After King Ferdinand II of Naples granted Tramontano the county despite previous promises of city autonomy, the Count imposed heavy taxes to fund the project and settle personal debts. This oppression led to widespread dissatisfaction among the citizens, culminating in a conspiracy formed at a site known as the "stone of bad advice." On December 29, 1514, disgruntled residents assassinated Count Tramontano near the Matera Cathedral, an event that left the castle permanently unfinished. For centuries, the site stood as an incomplete monument to failed tyranny, with only portions of the intended defensive network ever realized.

In modern times, the castle and its surrounding park fell into disrepair until restoration efforts commenced in 2008, financed largely by national lottery funds. These ongoing projects aim to renovate the tufa walls and restore the moat to preserve the landmark's structural integrity. Although the nearby city of Matera has gained international fame as a filming location for major religious epics, Castello Tramontano itself remains closed to the public. Despite its incomplete state, it stands as a preserved testament to the region's complex feudal past and the dramatic events that shaped its development during the early 16th century.
