Castello di Pianisi

Sant'Elia a Pianisi is a historic municipality located in the Province of Campobasso within the Molise region of southern Italy, situated approximately twenty kilometers northeast of Campobasso. While often associated with the nearby Castello di Pianisi, the site is intrinsically linked to the town's evolution following a significant natural disaster in the 15th century. This event forced the original population of Pianisi to relocate from the upper elevations to the lower areas surrounding the local abbey, leading to the formation of the current settlement known as Sant'Elia a Pianisi. Before the Unification of Italy in 1861, the area was part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, reflecting a long history of regional governance and cultural development.

The town holds considerable historical and religious significance, most notably as a residence for Padre Pio during his early years, where he lived for several periods before gaining worldwide fame. The local cultural landscape is enriched by important artistic heritage, including the earliest frescoes by the artist Paolo Gamba, which are preserved within the town's Capuchin Convent.
