Castello di Petroia

The Castle of Petroia is a historic fortress located near the town of Gubbio in the Umbria region of Italy. Its origins date back to the 9th and 10th centuries when the commune of Gubbio first began constructing a fortification on the site. By 1073, documents confirm the existence of a substantial structure there. Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle played a strategic role in regional power struggles, notably changing hands during conflicts between Gubbio and Perugia in 1257. It eventually became part of the Duchy of Urbino after Gubbio lost its status as a free town in the late 14th century. The architecture reflects its long evolution from a medieval defensive outpost to a noble residence, characterized by its commanding position over the surrounding landscape.

The estate holds significant historical interest due to its connection with the renowned Montefeltro family. In 1422, Elisabetta degli Accomandugi gave birth to Federico da Montefeltro, the future Duke of Urbino, within these walls. Over the centuries, ownership passed through various prominent families, including the Canossa and Ugolini clans, before being acquired by the Monte di Pietà charity in 1617. Following several subsequent sales, the property was purchased by the Sagrini family in 1909. Today, the castle remains in the hands of this family, having been carefully restored and converted into a hotel and relais. This adaptive reuse has preserved the structural integrity of the ancient building while allowing visitors to experience its rich heritage firsthand.
