Castello del Buonconsiglio
Buonconsiglio Castle, located in Trento in northern Italy, is a historic fortress complex that originated in the 13th century. Initially constructed as a fortified building known as Castelvecchio next to the city walls, it served as the official seat of the Prince-Bishops of Trent from its inception until 1803. The structure is not a single building but a collection of edifices from various eras enclosed by defensive walls on slightly elevated ground. Its architectural evolution reflects centuries of modification, beginning with Gothic expansions under Bishop George of Liechtenstein and Johannes Hinderbach, who added a distinctive double loggia entrance. The most significant transformation occurred in the 16th century when Cardinal Bernardo Clesio commissioned the Palazzo Magno, a grand residence built in the Italian Renaissance style that stands alongside the older medieval structures.
The castle holds immense historical and artistic significance, particularly within its Eagle Tower, which houses the famous Cycle of the Months. This pictorial cycle is considered one of the most fascinating examples of late Middle Ages secular art. After the Prince-Bishopric ended, the site suffered a period of decline, serving as Austrian military barracks and later as a jail, which led to considerable decay. However, following Trento's return to Italy in the 1920s, the complex was restored and established as a National Museum. Today, it operates as the Provincial Gallery of Art and remains open to the public. Local legend suggests the existence of a secret tunnel connecting the castle to the Trento Cathedral, allowing bishops to travel unseen. In modern times, the site gained further cultural relevance in 2015 when it granted filming rights for a music video, marking a new chapter in its long history.
