Cartier Castle

Cartier Castle, also known as Château Bilquin de Cartier, is a historic château located in Marchienne-au-Pont, a district of Charleroi in Wallonia, Belgium. Originally constructed around 1635 by the Honoré family on the banks of the Sambre river, the site previously held a seigneurial manor destroyed in 1554. During the War of Devolution in 1667, the castle served as a neutral hospital for French and Spanish soldiers. In 1695, wealthy forge owner Guillaume de Bilquin purchased and enhanced the structure before it passed to the Cartier de Marchienne family through marriage in 1717.

The estate remained under Cartier family ownership for over two centuries until a severe fire in 1932 prompted the municipality to purchase the property in 1938. Notably, the castle is linked to French novelist Marguerite Yourcenar, who visited
