Căpâlnaș

Căpâlnaș is a village within the Birchiș commune, located in Arad County in western Romania. Situated in the contact zone between the Mureș Couloir and the Lipova Hills, it lies approximately 81 kilometers from the county seat of Arad. The village is one of four settlements that make up the commune, alongside Birchiș, Ostrov, and Virișmort. While the broader area has ancient roots with neighboring Ostrov documented as early as 1169, Căpâlnaș itself was first mentioned in historical records in 1369 under the name Kápolnás.

The most prominent feature of the village is its castle, a significant historical and architectural monument constructed during the 19th century. This structure represents an important piece of local heritage, reflecting the architectural trends of that era in the region. Unlike many historical fortifications that have fallen into ruin or been converted into museums, this castle has been adapted for continued practical use. It currently functions as a sanatorium, serving as a medical facility for recovery and treatment while preserving its status as a protected monument.

Beyond its architectural landmark, the locality is part of a region known for its rich cultural traditions and agricultural economy. The Birchiș commune, including Căpâlnaș, is renowned both domestically and internationally for the high-quality ceramic products created by local craftsmen. The area maintains a primarily rural character, with an economy focused on plant growing and livestock breeding. Today, the castle stands as a testament to the village's long history, bridging its 14th-century origins and 19th-century development with its modern role in healthcare and community life.
