Cana

Cana is a historic village located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, specifically within the province of Grosseto. Administratively, it serves as a frazione of the comune of Roccalbegna and is situated in the southern area of Mount Amiata. The settlement lies approximately 32 kilometers from the city of Grosseto and 11 kilometers from Roccalbegna itself. Perched at an elevation of 480 meters above sea level, Cana maintains a small community atmosphere, with census data from 2001 recording a population of 225 residents, a figure that saw a slight increase to 263 by 2011.

The village is defined by its rich medieval heritage and distinctive architectural landmarks that reflect centuries of history. Its most prominent structure is the Rocca aldobrandesca, a formidable fortress constructed in the 13th century by the powerful Aldobrandeschi family. Surrounding the village are ancient fortification walls dating back to the same era, which originally protected the inhabitants. Religious architecture is represented by the main parish church of San Martino, which dates to the 13th century but underwent significant rebuilding in 1970, and the smaller 15th-century Chapel of Madonna del Conforto, known for housing a revered painting of the Virgin. Additionally, a Medicean well built during the 17th century stands as a testament to later developments under the Medici family.

Today, Cana remains a preserved historical site where these ancient structures continue to shape the landscape. While the main church was modernized in the 20th century, the presence of the original fortress walls and the medieval rocca highlights the village's strategic importance in centuries past.
