Burgruine Steuerberg is a historic hilltop castle ruin located near Feldkirchen in Carinthia, Austria, situated at an elevation of 779 meters above sea level. While the exact construction date remains unconfirmed, historical evidence suggests the fortress was originally established by the Eppenstein dukes of Carinthia during the 11th century. Following the extinction of the male Eppenstein line in 1122, ownership transferred to the Lords of Touernich, who held the site as vassals under the Spanheim family. The castle served as a strategic stronghold for centuries before eventually being abandoned in 1827, leaving behind the stone remnants visible today.

Architecturally, the complex was designed primarily as a functional facility rather than a luxurious residence. A preserved description from 1603 reveals a walled structure stretching 70 meters in length, dominated by stables and storerooms with limited living quarters. The layout featured a southern residential wing separated from the northern courtyard by a moat and drawbridge, with a heavy wooden door guarding the western entrance. Notable internal features included rock-carved cellars, a vaulted kitchen, and an upper-floor dining hall known as the Mueshaus, which offered panoramic views of the valley through large windows and wooden bay windows. A chapel also stood within the spacious courtyard, having been relocated and rebuilt during the late 13th century.

The historical significance of Burgruine Steuerberg is highlighted by its transition from an active medieval fortification to a disused site noted by historian Johann Weikhard von Valvasor in 1688. By the late 17th century, the castle had already fallen into significant disrepair, losing its former importance. Currently, the site exists as a ruin where remaining wall fragments and detailed historical records provide visitors with a clear understanding of its original grandeur and daily operations. Although no longer inhabited, the preserved descriptions of its unique cellular structures and defensive moat offer valuable insights into regional military architecture and the evolution of Carinthian noble estates over nearly a millennium.
