Burgruine Aggstein
Aggstein Castle, known locally as Burgruine Aggstein, is a historic ruined fortress situated in the Wachau region of Lower Austria. Perched approximately 480 meters above sea level on a rocky outcrop running east to west, the site overlooks the right bank of the Danube River within the municipality of Schönbühel-Aggsbach. Originally constructed in the early 12th century by Manegold III of Aggsbach, the castle features medieval military architecture that was later adapted with embrasures for artillery following damage in the 16th century. Its strategic elevation provided a commanding view of the river, making it a critical point for controlling waterborne traffic throughout its active history.
The castle possesses a turbulent historical legacy defined by feudal disputes and notorious ownership. During the 15th century, it became infamous under Jörg Scheck von Wald, a chamberlain who rebuilt the structure only to become a ruthless robber baron known as Schreckenwald, or Terror Forest, for raiding passing ships. The fortress changed hands frequently through sieges involving rival nobles and was eventually acquired by Duke Leopold III to curb these raids. It suffered significant destruction during the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529 but was subsequently reconstructed. After passing through various noble families, including the Starhembergs, the site was gradually neglected from the 17th century onward.
Today, Aggstein Castle stands as a picturesque ruin, offering visitors a glimpse into the region's volatile past. While no longer inhabited or used for military purposes, the remaining rock structures and walls serve as a popular landmark along the Danube. The site preserves the memory of its dramatic history, from the power struggles of the Kuenring family to the reign of terror by feudal lords. Its location high above the river continues to attract tourists interested in the architectural remnants and the legendary tales of the Wachau valley.
