Burg Oberkapfenberg
Burg Oberkapfenberg is a prominent hilltop castle located in Kapfenberg, Styria, Austria. Perched on the Schlossberg at an elevation of approximately 592 meters, the fortress overlooks the scenic Mürz valley and serves as one of the town's most recognizable landmarks. While a structure named Chaffenberch was first documented in 1173, the current complex was primarily constructed in the late 13th century by the Lords of Stubenberg. Originally serving as a residence and administrative center, the castle underwent significant reconstruction around 1550, adopting a distinct Renaissance architectural style that defines much of its present appearance.
The site experienced a period of decline after the Stubenberg family relocated in 1739, leading to decades of abandonment and ruin. Restoration efforts began in 1955 under Count Stubenberg, who adapted the historic walls into a castle hotel. In 1992, the municipality of Kapfenberg acquired the property, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, the castle is largely preserved and functions as a vibrant cultural hub, housing exhibition rooms, event spaces, and a dedicated falconry center.
Visitors to Burg Oberkapfenberg can engage with its rich history through guided tours, medieval-themed activities, and impressive birds-of-prey demonstrations. The castle is perhaps best known for hosting the annual Ritterfest, a popular medieval festival featuring knight displays, live music, theater performances, craft markets, and falconry shows.
