Burg Lockenhaus

Burg Lockenhaus, historically known as Leuca or Léka, is a medieval fortress situated in the Güns Valley within the town of Lockenhaus in Burgenland, eastern Austria. Perched on a hill spur approximately 368 meters above sea level, the castle lies near the Hungarian border and is part of the Naturpark Geschriebenstein. Constructed around the year 1200, the structure showcases a distinctive blend of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Its strategic location in the hilly terrain southeast of Vienna and northeast of Graz made it a significant defensive point throughout the centuries, with a lake lying immediately to its east.

The castle boasts a rich historical lineage, having been controlled by several prominent noble families including the Güssinger, Kanizsay, Nádasdy, and Esterházy dynasties between the 13th and 17th centuries. These occupants shaped the fortress through various periods of regional conflict and political change. Today, Burg Lockenhaus is owned and managed by the Professor Paul Anton Keller Foundation. The property has undergone refurbishment to preserve its structural integrity and historical character, ensuring it remains a well-maintained landmark rather than a ruin.

Currently, the castle is open to the public and serves as a cultural destination within the region. Visitors can access the site via express bus services along the Eisenstadter Bundestrasse. As both a historical monument and an active venue under the foundation's care, Burg Lockenhaus continues to educate guests about its medieval origins and the noble families that once ruled from its walls.
