Borghetto di Borbera is a municipality situated in the Province of Alessandria within the Piedmont region of Italy. Located approximately 110 kilometers southeast of Turin and 35 kilometers from Alessandria, this historic town sits at an elevation of 295 meters. While the main settlement functions as a standard Italian comune with a population of just under 2,000 residents, its true architectural significance lies in the surrounding frazioni, particularly the nearby village of Torre Ratti. This area is home to a well-preserved castle originally constructed in the 11th century, which has undergone multiple enlargements and restorations over subsequent centuries to maintain its structural integrity.

The historical narrative of the local fortifications is marked by both survival and loss. Although the castle in Torre Ratti remains a prominent landmark, the original medieval castle located directly within Borghetto di Borbera has largely vanished. Over time, severe water erosion and landslides caused the structure to collapse into the adjacent riverbed, leaving behind only fragmented remnants such as an ancient tower and a medieval gate. These ruins serve as a testament to the town's long history and the powerful natural forces that have shaped the landscape. Beyond its medieval heritage, the town also boasts early 20th-century architectural innovation, featuring a town hall recognized as one of the first reinforced concrete buildings constructed in Italy.
