Bixad

Bixad is a commune located in Covasna County within the Székely Land region of eastern Transylvania, Romania. Situated in a valley on the upper reaches of the Olt River at an altitude of 663 meters, it lies on the northern side of the Baraolt Mountains near the border with Harghita County. The settlement is strategically positioned along national road DN12 and serves as a junction for route DN11C, while also being accessible via two train stations on the main railway line connecting Brașov to Satu Mare. Historically, the village was merged with Malnaș in 1968 before regaining its status as an independent commune in 2004. The population consists predominantly of ethnic Hungarians, specifically Székelys, who have maintained a strong cultural presence in the area for centuries.

The most notable historical structure in Bixad is the Mikes Armin School, originally constructed around 1900 as a hunting lodge for Count Ármin Mikes. This building reflects the architectural heritage of the local nobility and currently functions as an educational facility that also houses a small museum. The museum exhibits glass artifacts produced by a local factory operated by the Mikó and Mikes families until 1918, highlighting the village's industrial past. Beyond this central landmark, the area is renowned for its natural thermal resources, collectively known as the Mikes Spas, which include the Vallato, Hammas, and Bükki springs. These sites have long attracted visitors seeking the therapeutic benefits of the region's mineral waters.

Today, Bixad remains a quiet rural community that balances its agricultural roots with growing tourism potential driven by its spa facilities and historical sites. The preservation of the former hunting lodge and the continued operation of local schools demonstrate the village's commitment to maintaining its cultural identity. While the population has seen a gradual decline in recent decades, the commune retains its significance as a gateway to the northern parts of Covasna County.
