Bayat Castle
Bayat Castle, known locally as Bayat qalası, is a historic military installation located in the Kebirli village of the Tartar District in Azerbaijan. Constructed in 1748 by Panah Ali Khan Javanshir, the founder of the Karabakh Khanate, this fortress served as the very first capital of the khanate following the death of the Iranian ruler Nader Shah. The structure was named after the Turkic Bayat clan and was strategically designed with comprehensive defense mechanisms, including protective walls and warfare trenches. Built primarily from hard burned bricks, the castle was a self-contained community that featured essential civic structures such as a market, a bath house, and a mosque. Upon its completion, Panah Ali Khan relocated his entire court to this new stronghold to consolidate his power in the region.
The historical significance of Bayat Castle lies in its role as the inaugural administrative center of the Karabakh Khanate, though its tenure as the capital was relatively brief. By 1752, the capital was moved to the newly constructed Shahbulag Castle in the lowlands, and later to the mountainous fortress of Shusha, which offered superior natural defenses against external threats from Iran. Despite being superseded by these later fortifications, Bayat Castle remains a crucial landmark in Azerbaijani history, representing the early formation of the khanate system in the South Caucasus during the mid-18th century.
Today, Bayat Castle is recognized as one of the most valuable historic and cultural monuments in Azerbaijan. Although it has endured over two centuries of exposure and regional conflict, parts of the original structure have partially survived, standing as a testament to the architectural capabilities of its era. It is categorized alongside other significant royal residences and Islamic architectural sites in the country. While specific details regarding its current functional use are limited in available records, its status as a preserved monument highlights its enduring importance to the national heritage of Azerbaijan and its identity as a key tourist attraction within the Tartar District.
