Barengo Castle

Barengo Castle, known locally as Castello di Barengo, is a historic fortress situated in the town of Barengo within the Piedmont region of Italy. Strategically positioned along an ancient route connecting the Via Francigena to the fords of the Sesia River, the site served as a critical defensive point. While its exact founding date remains unknown, the first documented evidence of the castrum appears in the 14th century. During this era, the local settlement moved closer to the fortified walls for safety, successfully withstanding significant fire and plundering in 1358 during conflicts between the forces of Galeazzo II Visconti and Marquis Giovanni of Monferrato. By 1480, Melchiorre Tornielli completed the structure, establishing it as a notable example of 15th-century military architecture alongside the nearby fortress in Briona.

Over the subsequent centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, passing to the Ferrari and Botta families before falling into severe decay by the early 19th century. Acquisition by the Mazza family in 1849 led to restoration efforts that significantly altered the original layout. Following World War I, Count Gaudenzio Tornielli di Borgolavezzaro commissioned architect Nigra to rebuild the complex in a Neo-Medieval style, a transformation that defines much of its current appearance. The Boroli family later undertook further renovations as the most recent owners, ensuring the preservation of the estate through modern times.

Constructed almost entirely of brick, the castle features an irregular trapezoidal plan centered around a courtyard. Although the original two corner towers on the western side have been lost, the structure retains several key historical elements. These include a projecting cylindrical turret at the northeast corner and a section of crenellated wall, offering glimpses into its medieval origins. The main entrance, historically accessed via a drawbridge to the northeast, remains a focal point of the design. Today, the castle stands as a testament to the region's turbulent military history and the evolving architectural tastes of its various proprietors.
