Attur Fort
wikipedia

Attur Fort is a historic military installation located in the town of Attur within the Salem district of Tamil Nadu, India. Situated on the banks of the Vashista River, approximately 56 kilometers from the city of Salem, the structure was originally constructed in the 17th century. It was built by Lakshmana Nayakan, a chieftain of the Gatti Mudaliar dynasty who served under the Madurai Nayaks. The fort represents a significant example of regional military architecture from the Nayak period, featuring arch-type constructions that reflect the engineering styles prevalent in South India during that era.

The site holds considerable historical significance due to its strategic role in the power struggles between local kingdoms and colonial forces. Over the centuries, control of the fort shifted between the Mysore Kingdom under Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, and the British East India Company. Tipu Sultan notably utilized the complex as an arms depot and watchtower before ceding it to the British following the Treaty of Srirangapatnam after the Third Mysore War. The British subsequently maintained the fort as an active garrison until 1854, after which it ceased military operations.

Currently, the Attur Fort is under the administrative control of the Archaeology Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The extensive grounds historically housed two palaces, a court, three treasuries, two magazine points, and three temples. Despite its rich past, the fort faces significant challenges in the modern era. While some structures remain standing, large portions of the site have become dilapidated. Furthermore, encroachment by slum dwellers has affected much of the remaining area, leaving this important piece of heritage in a precarious condition despite its official protected status.
