Anandgarh Fort

Gurdwara Qila Anandgarh Sahib, also known as Anandgarh Fort, is a historic Sikh fortress and place of worship located in Anandpur Sahib within the Rupnagar district of Punjab, India. Situated on a hill near the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum, it stands as the highest of the five defensive forts constructed by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. The name Anandgarh translates to "fort of bliss," reflecting its spiritual significance alongside its military purpose. Built originally in the late 17th century, the site served as a strategic stronghold where Guru Gobind Singh resided for twenty-five years, leading defenses against invading Mughal forces and hostile hill Rajas during a turbulent period in Sikh history.

The architectural style follows traditional Sikh design, though the current structure visible today dates primarily to renovations undertaken in the 1970s under Seva Singh. Like other forts in the complex, the original earthworks and tunnels that once connected Anandgarh to neighboring citadels such as Lohgarh and Fatehgarh have largely been replaced by marble gurdwara structures following twentieth-century restoration efforts. Despite these changes, the site retains key historical features, including a Baoli Sahib, an ancient stepped well accessible via a passageway beneath the fort. Today, the location functions as an active religious site and hosts major festivals, most notably Hola Mahalla, drawing pilgrims who come to honor the martial and spiritual legacy of the Guru.

Anandgarh Fort remains a symbol of Sikh resilience and sovereignty, marking the ground where pivotal battles were fought and community defense strategies were forged. Although much of the original fortification was altered during modern kar seva initiatives, the site continues to preserve the memory of Guru Gobind Singh's leadership. Historical photographs from the 1930s document the earlier appearance of the fortress before recent modifications, offering insight into its evolution over time. As both a gurdwara and a former military outpost, Anandgarh Qila serves as an enduring monument to the fusion of faith and courage that defines Sikh heritage in Punjab.
